What Do You Think About The Presidential Debate (Updated)

Posted in 2008 Elections at 9:50 pm by thevoicesofstuart

By Peggy Schlichter

I am going to abstain from this discussion.  You all know by now that I am not impressed with either candidate.  Nothing was said that changed my mind.  It just further confirmed my opinion on them.

If you have anything you wish to say about the debate go for it.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________

After watching the latest debate Wednesday night I stand firm that neither candidate offers any real leadership or inspriation.   I stand firm in my conviction that neither candidate deserves a single vote.

On the democratic side the only change they want to make is a wholesale jump to socialism.  The taking from one group to give to another all under the guise of government.  On the republican side just more big government and empire building.

Both received major contributions from wall street and both voted for the bailout.

Neither candidate spoke of cutting government spending.  If you were listening closely the only spending cuts mentioned were to cut somewhere else to fund their new ideas.

Both candidates continue to use fear to push their platforms.  I do not buy this living in fear propaganda.  More people die from cancer or car accidents every year than from terrorists.  I mean think about it.

There are fewer than three thousand terrorists in the entire world.  Yet we have our rights negated for their actions. This is nothing more than punishing the many for the sins of the few.

And what about all these presidential directives that our current president has signed into being that has stripped just about every inalienable right away from each and everyone of us under the guise of making us safe.

I ask safe from who.

We have more to fear from our current government than from any terrorist.  I did not hear either one talking about ending any of them.

I did not hear either candidate speak about stopping the transfer of worthless so called “assets” onto the backs of the taxpayer.  As near as I can figure out the Federal Reserve has loaned in excess of a trillion dollars to banks in the last year through the lending window and it did not one thing to stave off the credit crunch.  They recently doubled the lending amount on top of the 700 billion for the bailout and that has done not one thing to help either.

I heard neither candidate say that they understood Social Security and Medicare are grossly underfunded nor did they put forth a plan to fix it.

All in all neither understands free market economics nor the fact that you cannot spend your way out of debt.

In this election, it is not a choice of the lesser of two evils.  Nor is it about a two party system.  This republic was never based on just two parties.  It was based on the right for people to choose their representatives in  government.  It is all about choosing to vote for a candidate who puts the people first.  It is about putting your foot down and saying no more big government, no more fear mongering, no more misrepresentation by officials who choose to thumb their noses at the very people who elect them.

I say that when you look at your ballot think about sending the biggest, loudest, most raspberry sounding nose thumb right back at every incumbent and presidential candidate who voted against the wishes of their constituents.

There are three other parties that you will see on your ballot.  The Greens, Socialists and Constitutionalists.

If everyone who is as dissatisfied as I am with this election choice cast a vote for neither republican or democrat it would make it a vote of “no confidence” in the two parties and the current political atmosphere.

Things would begin to change in this country.  It is so apparent that the course of this country can no longer be left in the hands of the current politicians.

While the Green and Socialist Parties have no interest for me, maybe just maybe, we need a constitutionalist for a change.  So think about it and cast your vote for taking back this country by voting for neither democrat or republican.

Sold Down The River By Senators Grassley And Harkin

Posted in 2008 Elections, my thoughts at 1:03 am by thevoicesofstuart

By Peggy Schlichter

That is right.  Both of our Iowa Senators both voted yes on the bailout this evening.

After talking with both of the senator’s offices this morning and being assured that the senators were very aware of the wishes of their constituents to not support this bill they have turned around and insulted the very being of every Iowan.  According to the young men I talked to this morning calls were running about 200 no to every 1 yes.  That to me is a very clear signal.  Apparently it was not for the Senators.

This is a blatant “nose thumb” to their constituents.  The very people who have allowed them to hold this high office of trust.

That is it for me.  As far as I am concerned Senator Harkin has lost my vote in November.   I will be voting for the other guy.  His name is Christopher Reed.  The only thing I know about him is what his website says and he is not Senator Harkin.

So if a senator cannot take a rather pointed hint as evidently these two can’t.  The only thing left is to vote him out of office.  He does not deserve to hold the office any longer not does he deserve to represent the people of Iowa.

This should not be forgotten when Senator Grassley’s term is up either.

There is absolutely no excuse for this.

Representatives Braley and King deserve a phone call telling them to stay the course and continue to vote no.

Senators McCain and Obama both voted yes also.  If this does not tell you that they do not deserve your vote I do not know what else to say to you.

What Did You Think Of The Debate

Posted in 2008 Elections at 10:42 pm by thevoicesofstuart

By Peggy Schlichter

I sat through the debate fighting the urge to switch over to reruns of the Dog Whisperer.  But I made my self sit there and listen.

For me it just confirmed my original thoughts that there is very little difference between the two candidates.  There was entirely to many “I agree” prefaces to starting their answers.

The thing that struck me the most is that neither one has a clear understanding of the economic situation, what is going on with the financial system because of their commitments to a bailout nor do they really want to end the war.

John McCain did say he wanted to cut spending but that will never happen because the bailout he is committed to will eat every penny they cut somewhere else.  If by a miracle the bailout does not get approved then only time will tell but I have little faith in his commitment to actually make meaningful cuts.

I was kind of surprised that I did not space off Barack Obama tonight.  It definitely helped that he left the “change” word at home.  Other than that he did not really say anything new or interesting to catch my interest.

What did you think about the debate?

For All You Obama Supporters, Something To Think About

Posted in 2008 Elections at 10:57 am by thevoicesofstuart

By Peggy Schlichter

I received this comment asking what I think about the information.  Read it for yourselves and check out the sites mentioned in the comment to verify the statements made.  I am not a fan of Mr. Obama nor do I believe that he is presidential material.  Every person I have talked to who supports him cannot articulate any particular point that they believe he has the answer to.  I find that every point he talks about is pandering to the publics’ dissatisfaction with the current status quo without any real understanding of what the actual problems are.  His immediate quick fixes involve throwing another layer of government and tax money at it.  I do believe that he is running a good scam and it is working for him quite well, unfortunately.  I have a hard time understanding how so many people have allowed themselves to be sucked into thinking he is the answer the country needs yet are they cannot even speak from enough self knowledge and understanding to put forth a sound debate in support of his platform.

Here is the comment.  What do you think?

I was sent this to read, interesting. Your point of view Peg?

My Night Out At The Caucus

Posted in 2008 Elections at 5:53 pm by thevoicesofstuart

By Peggy Schlichter

What a way to start the New Year.  My stomach is still just this side of a full revolt with no sign of weakening and I have about enough energy to move from one room to the next with a nap in between.  Down south they call it “Feeling Puny” and boy do I.

Thought I was finally feeling better yesterday.  Ate enough to be considered a meal at dinner time.  Took a short nap in the afternoon.  Felt pretty good.  Made the decision to go to the caucus last night in Greenfield and had a interesting time.  Came home and slept for 10 hours and feel terrible again.

My first Iowa Republican Caucus.  Considering that this is the first time in my adult life that I have lived back in Iowa during the time of a Presidential Election I figured that I should at least go and check it out and see what actually goes on during one.  It is a different process than any I have seen before.  Don’t know if it is any better or worse than a primary.  Don’t even know if it really matters in the grand scheme of things if one type is better or not.

What surprised the coordinators was that so many people showed up last night.  They were expecting 35 to 50 people and 244 showed up.  The room was packed.  Needless to say it took them longer to get everyone checked in and the event started about 30 minutes later than planned.

After a few people stood and talked about their candidate we broke into districts, had our vote and got the 8 delegates chosen.  All in all it was a good evening and I enjoyed talking to so many new faces concerned about the direction the country is trying to decide to go in.

Stump For Your Candidate

Posted in 2008 Elections, my thoughts at 11:47 am by thevoicesofstuart

By Peggy Schlichter

As always these are my thoughts and mine alone.

With 14 days to the Iowa Caucus to pick the nominees for the Republican and Democratic Presidential Race here is your chance to stump for your candidate.

I don’t know about you but I have made up my mind on this issue.

After looking at all the candidates and their platforms I find that the majority don’t have  platforms they have pricetags.  They are pandering to different ideological, racial and religious groups, each with their own separate agendas, identities and special interests.  They have a litany of sound bites but no substance to support them.  Just looking at the pricetags to some of these panderings is enough to make me realize that they have no intention to make any real changes in the current governmental trends.

In my mind to many people have bought into the mindset that the federal government knows how to fix societal problems.  If you look at recent history the federal government has a very poor track record.  Looking at FEMA’s handling of recent natural disasters, the Federal Reserve and its attempts to bail out financial institutions who deserve to fail for their bad business practices and the recent pushes for a National ID Card and ID-CHIP is enough to tell me that there is no reason to believe anyone who supports these actions.

Based on everything I have learned about the candidates I can only support Ron Paul.  I can find no fault in his voting record.  His ability to speak to the heart of a problem even when his view is not popular or recognized tells me he has courage and integrity.  He has never accepted a donation from any special interest group.  His campaign has raised enough money to qualify for federal matching funds yet he did not accept them.  Do I agree with everything he says? No, but I do think he has the best interest of this country as his primary reason for seeking the candidacy and I just do not get that feeling from the rest of the pack.

Listen to what others have to say about Ron Paul at Ron Paul Revolution Radio.

So here is your chance to try and make me change my mind if you feel your candidate is a better choice.

Fact Checking The Presidential Candidates

Posted in 2008 Elections at 5:13 pm by thevoicesofstuart

By Peggy Schlichter

Have you ever wondered about the sound bites used by presidential candidates, the accusations thrown at other candidates or even if what you have heard is true or not?

If so, there is a website that is dedicated to fact checking the candidates.  The St. Petersburg Times and Congregational Quarterly have teamed up to research and debunk all the statements, claims and rumors circulating about the candidates.

They have articles, a Truth-O-Meter that identifies at a glance the results of their research, an Attack File that evaluates the latest barbs being thrown and their accuracy.  It even breaks down the issues and what the candidates are saying.

I especially like the “Pants On Fire” over the meter when it is an out right lie.

There are multiple ways to access the information and the site is easy to navigate.

Here it is.  http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/

Tired Of All The Political Phone Calls

Posted in 2008 Elections at 4:30 pm by thevoicesofstuart

or Messin’ With The PAC’s Cuz Its Fun.

I don’t know about you but in the last week alone I have had 13 phone calls from 5 presidential candidates.  The weeks before it was 14, 9, 6, 11 and so on.  It never fails that just when you get sat down to eat the phone rings.  Or the only tv show you really want to watch just starts and sure enough the phone rings.  And if that isn’t enough you go to the mailbox and there is more interchangeable campaign speak staring you in the face.

The worst of it is that it has been going on for weeks and weeks now with nothing changing except the name of the candidate.

Have you noticed that one week they say one thing and then a poll comes out and everyone changes their speak to whatever the poll leader said the previous week.  Do they really think that people are so unattentive to not even notice.

So after putting up with this for a couple of weeks I started trying different ploys to get my name removed from their call lists because asking just wasn’t working.  That meant that I had to start getting creative and try different things because hanging up didn’t work either.

The first attempt was to just pick another candidates name at random and talk about how great they were until they hung up on me.  I tried that one four or five times but there was no noticable difference in the number of calls.

My second attempt was two part.  If the call was a recorded message I just laid the phone down on the table and left it there until the next time I walked by.  That way they have to pay for the call and I didn’t have to listen to them.  If it was a real person I simply told them that I was undecided.  Well as you can tell the first part accomplished it mission.  The second part was a big mistake because now I was branded as undecided and it generated more calls to try and convince me that they were the candidate for me.  It also confirmed that the candidates buy each others mailing lists.  What a set back this attempt was.

At this point it was time to really put my thinking cap on to come up with a plan for handling live calls keeping in mind that the objective was to make the phone stop ringing.

I then tried saying that I would vote for whoever called me the least.  That they would get my vote by default simply because they did not waste my time as much as the other candidates.  But then the whole I cannot believe you would base your vote on such a silly reason rebuttals began.  Another failure.

This next scenerio was used with two other candidates names but just never got any decent results.  Basically because all the other candidates are so interchangeable that they believe that people can still be swayed in their thinking right up to the last minute so they will keep trying.  So then I tried using Ron Paul and it started working.

I let them say their spiel and when they ask if they can count on my vote I simple reply no and stay quiet.  At this point the line goes quiet momentarily while they decide what to say next.  They then hesitatingly inquire if I would mind telling them who I have decided to vote for.  I reply with no I don’t mind and stay quiet again.  They go quiet again and then hesitatingly ask who I have decided to vote for.  I tell them Ron Paul and stay quiet.  After another pause on the other end they hesitatingly ask would I mind telling them why I chose him.  I reply with no I don’t mind and stay quiet.  After another pause they hesitatingly ask why did I choose him.  I tell them that I might not agree with everything he does but I can always count on him to say and do exactly what he says he will and then I stay quiet again.  At this point their reply is usually something along the lines of I can see you have made up your mind, thanks, goodbye.

So far this has worked on the callers from two weeks ago.  It was used on the five callers this week and only time will tell if it continues to work or not.

The only reason I can think of that this seems to work is that it plays off of the impression campaigners have that Ron Paul supporters are unswayable.

At this point the election is a little over a year away and everyone has plenty of time to decide.  So if the PAC’s think I want my phone to ring that many times a week for the next year they have another think coming.  I may never succeed completely but the trying is becoming a fun game just messing with them.
